Police constables, Murugan, Kuyili and Farook are going about their everyday mundane routines of manning a neighbourhood checkpoint and ensuring that all lockdown guidelines are being followed. Their daily encounters include a host of irresponsible citizens across all age groups, from young boys riding triples on motorbikes to septuagenarian women trying to find excuses to venture out of their homes. While watching them execute thier duties despit the long hours, we learn that Murugan is smitten by Kuyili but she does not reciprocate his feelings. One particular afternoon, after a heated exchange with two rude citizens, Murugan and Farook stop Lokesh, a young man on a motorbike, who is lying to them to be allowed to go past their checkpoint. Lokesh finally tells the both of them the truth that he wants to go and meet his girlfriend Manasa, who has been locked up by her family and is being forced into a wedding the next day and seeks their help. Although hesitant at first, Murugan offers to help as he would get to see Kuyili who has recently been transferred to the same neighbourhood where the wedding is happening. The three police constables agree to undertake an adventure when they get together with a bunch of other COVID workers in the area and come up with a plan to help Lokesh reunite with his lover Manasa and help her escape the wedding. How they do it, do they succeed in it and does Kuyili reciprocate Murugan’s love forms the rest of this fun, heartwarming tale!

Nalla is an independent photographer living in a high rise that has the view of a lifeless, deserted city. Going through a break up amidst the stillness and the eerie silence of the pandemic takes a toll on her. She manages to manoeuvre her days with occasional social ties virtually until she meets a young man on a couple of these virtual meets. The deep sadness in his eyes grabs her attention initially and she connects with him when he shares his state of despair on how he lost his friend due to covid whose dog he was pet sitting while he was in the hospital. Nalla initiates a conversation with him that leads to many meaningful conversations and the two loners develop a bond virtually. She realises how this interconnectedness actually helps the both of them during these difficult times and being alone together is the key to surviving the global pandemic.

As Chennai wakes up to the sounds of birds chirping in sync with the temple bells and paper men hollering, Yashoda, a middle-aged woman sips her coffee tending her plants at the terrace, when her husband Murali bursts open the terrace door—interrupting her peace to begin his morning exercises. Separated by walls of ego and silence, the couple's house is a long-standing witness to their forgotten love. Despite living in the same house without talking to each other for years, Yashoda and Murali have uncovered a language of their own that allows them to have deeply structured and unwoven personal lives. Oblivious to their yin and yang, the second wave of COVID-19 lockdown hits the city, suspending their social lives and forcing them to coexist with each other. In the next few days, Murali notices Yashoda coughing and wearing a mask inside the house. Though he wants to know why, he can't find the words to ask her as if he's forgotten how to reach out to her. On the other end, Yashoda yearns to share with him that she is not okay but she stops herself. The next morning, when a health care worker enters the house to take an RT-PCR test for Yashoda, Murali is taken aback by a range of emotions leading him to rethink their fight and the silence that has followed since. The whys and whats of the fight seem blurry to Murali and it is irrelevant to the audience as the reasons might vary, from person to person in every house but—the ego—it is universal. With Yashoda being suspected to have COVID-19, will the ineffable fear weighing their minds thaw their walls of ego?

Arjun is a simple guy with simple needs. He has lived all his life in Chennai with his parents. His mother constantly reminds him of how his friends already have school-going kids while he still remains unmarried. Arjun is in love but he finds it impossible to bring the topic to his parents, especially his tough-as-nails father. With the pandemic confining everyone indoors, the pressure from his partner on Arjun mounts by the day to move out of his parents house and for them to move in together. Arjun’s inaction causes him and his loved ones a lot of grief and complicates his personal life. It is at this low point, that he reconnects with an old school friend, Velu. Arjun intially withdrawn and Vellu gregarious, eventually help each other shed their virtual masks and reveal their true selves to their loved ones.

When we meet 30-year-old Shobi, we find her tracing the pattern of a bug on her hand, Into this precarious space of listlessness, apathy and loneliness arrives the news that her father, who lives in Pondicherry has passed away. What follows is one defining week in Shobi's life when her own dynamic with death and grief shifts. While trying to sell the family house during lockdown – something her father had already decided – she grapples with the troubled relationship she had with her father and her own inability to grieve. We see glimpses of her in various functional situations out in the world – managing a low-key funeral, handling the broker, meeting her father’s friend at the district office, feeding a stray dog, interacting with the neighbours, and befriending their son Eric. But we also see the world she carries within – the loneliness she feels; the pain, the frustration that constantly bubbles under the surface; the spaces she rediscovers around the house; and the helplessness she feels at being unable to move beyond her own crumbling sense of self. Through this dance of her inner world and outer world, we watch Shobi unravel. We watch as she finds the comfort of relationships and the restorative power of memories, amidst the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death. We find her experiences become metaphors of hope. If to grieve is to feel alive, then to try a little every day to find meaning is to be alive. That life when lived, and grief when met, can be beautiful and uplifting. 'Shobi’ is like an antidote to the collective angst we all carry, through the poetic, abstract journey of an individual and her grief.
