Pan y Circo (Bread and Circus) - Pan y Circo - Season 1 - Inhaltsangabe:

Diego Luna puts on his chef’s hat and talks to biologist and climate change activist Julia Carabias and Daphtne Cuevas, a gender equality advocate who has devoted her career to ending violence against women.  Also Mexican author Emiliano Monge, wielder of a sharp, but accessible plume that writes about Mexico’s political, social and cultural realities, and the epidemiologist Samuel Ponce de León, who coordinates the University Emergency Management Commission at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Completing our guest list is Jair Tellez, a world-famous Mexican chef, who gives us his view on what the art of sharing food is going to look like in the future.  Chiming in are the influential voices of Yásnaya Aguilar, a Mixe linguist who stresses the importance of our differences and the weakness of the State compared to the strength of community organizations today; Dayra Fyah, an urban artist and gender violence activist who brings us the latest from Ecatepec, the most dangerous municipality in Mexico for women; and Carlos Martínez, a reporter who is all too familiar with the plight of migrants amidst the pandemic and who talks to us from his home country of El Salvador.  To round up, Health Undersecretary Dr. Hugo López-Gatell joins us from the seat of the Mexican government to explain the strategies of President López Obrador.  “Chronicles of a pandemic. Covid-19 and its repercussions” is a conversation, an opportunity to ground ourselves in a today that will enable us to build a tomorrow.

In Mexico, according to official records, ten femicides take place every day. However, this number is uncertain because there aren’t enough protocols for its detection, prevention, and eradication. Similarly, there’s a lack of gender perspective to investigate and solve these cases. Diego sits at the table with Aracely Osorio, activist and mother of Lesvy Rivera, a victim of femicide in Mexico City; Marion Reimers, journalist and sports analyst, head of the Versus organization; María Candelaria Ochoa Ávalos, National Commissioner for the Prevention and Eradication of Violence Against Women; Andrea Medina, women’s rights lawyer who has focused on the defense of victims of femicide; Dayra Fyah, a rapper from Ecatepec, the district with the largest number of gender-motivated murders; Diclya Samantha García Espinoza de los Monteros, Central Prosecutor for Gender-Related Crimes in Mexico State. Diego Luna, together with Chef Alexánder Suástegui lay the table so that our guests can discuss the cultural and social factors that encourage the normalization of violence, the movements and transformative actions in feminist revolutions, but most of all, share how it’s possible to do things differently.

Pan y Circo (Bread and Circus) - No One is Illegal: The Migrant Crisis - Inhaltsangabe:

Migration is at the very heart of humanity. The act of migrating, however, has become a matter of danger rather than a hope for salvation, and increasingly, a political weapon. We all have something to say, defend, and question about migratory movements, and it’s not always easy to find common grounds. Diego, together with Chef Javier Plascencia, set the table so that our guests can talk about the migrants’ condition and affliction, the social and political conflicts facing millions of people caught in territorial movements, and how the search for a better life can be a deadly one.

Pan y Circo (Bread and Circus) - Discrimination in Spanish - Inhaltsangabe:

Over 500 years after the Spanish conquest, the echoes of Spain and its culture still ripple through Latin America: in its language, its cuisine, the layout of its cities, investment by Spanish companies, the pride of Latin Americans in their Spanish heritage, and myriad other aspects. But despite the different backgrounds between Spain and Latin America, the old tensions still simmer under the surface. Bread and Circus, directed and hosted by Diego Luna, travels to Madrid, Spain, to approach this reality with a curious gaze in search for answers, hoping to listen to and engage with voices that can contribute to the discussion. Aside from our traditional dinner guests (Carolina Elías, Gabriela Wiener, Jorge Volpi, José Andrés Rojo, Maite Rico), others with Latin and Spanish roots - including those who don’t believe in nationalities (Joaquín Sabina, Roberto Ruiz, Jorge Drexler, Lola Pons, among others) - share their views about how - or whether - we can bridge the distance to build a more agreeable future.
