Beth musste feststellen, dass Ehemann Dean das Familiengeschäft an die Wand gefahren hat, zudem hat er eine Affäre – und nun droht die Familie wegen Hypotheken-Rückständen das Haus zu verlieren. Ruby hat ein chronisch krankes Kind. Eine neue Medizin könnte Linderung verschaffen, doch die fällige private Zuzahlung würde Tausende Dollar betragen. Annie schlägt sich als Kassiererin in einem Supermarkt durch. Nun droht ihr Ex mit einem teuren Sorgerechtsstreit.
Annie bringt den Ball ins Rollen: Sie stand als Kassiererin häufiger auf der anderen Seite bei Überfällen. Sie weiß, dass bei Fällen, wo niemand verletzt wurde, die Polizei nicht zu lange nach Tätern sucht und dass die Versicherung den für ein Unternehmen meist überschaubaren Schaden deckt.
