Bandish Bandits is a young, dynamic love story between an excellent Indian classical singer shackled by centuries of tradition and a free-spirited pop star who makes up for her mediocre talent with her sensational skills as a performer. It is the story of Radhe and Tamanna who, coming from very different worlds, set out together on a journey of self-discovery to see if opposites, though they might attract, can also adapt and go the long haul. Radhe has grown up in a conservative, small town family. His universe is centred on the ancient ancestral Haveli in which he lives, and he has never set foot outside the city of Jodhpur. His grandfather, Pandit Radhemohan Rathod, is the most celebrated Hindustani classical singer of the region, and reigns over the Rathod household with an iron fist, completely eclipsing his two disillusioned sons, Rajendra and Devendra. Rajendra’s wife, Mohini, forms the pacifist glue that keeps the bickering members of this dysfunctional family together. Radhe idolises his grandfather and wishes to follow in his footsteps. Enter Tamanna Sharma, the impossibly charismatic daughter of a divorced air force officer. She is the product of a modern, liberal upbringing diametrically opposed to that of Radhe. Though her origins also lie in Jodhpur, she has travelled the country with her father. She is everything Radhe is not: carefree, impulsive and rootless. We first meet Tamanna fleeing Mumbai. Her latest song has flopped, her contract with JP Music is under threat, and her passionate dream of becoming India’s first international pop star in jeopardy. The pressure is just too high. She takes flight for the comforting arms of her father, posted in Jodhpur. As Radhe and Tamanna meet, we see the collision of two distinct and disparate musical worlds and cultures. What follows is a rollercoaster ride of the fireworks that ensue as our two protagonists try to help each other out while also finding themselves.
