Each of the 6 stories in our anthology is selected to depict a specific kind of relationship and a different facet of love. Taken as a whole, the series runs the whole gamut of various forms of love in the modern era. Similarly, each story has its own individual setting, a section of the city of Hyderabad, appropriate to the themes and motifs of that particular episode. Like many Indian cities, Hyderabad is one place with many worlds within, packed cheek to jowl, coexisting with wondrous order amidst all chaos. If ‘My unlikely pandemic dream partner’ takes us to the vibrant by-lanes of Old City, ‘Finding your penguin…’ shows the middle-class colonies, with independent houses (eg. Himayatnagar, Gandhinagar) of which this city has many. ‘About that rustle in the bushes’ gives us a taste of apartment dwellings, often surrounded by multiple games of gully cricket by neighbour kids unfolding simultaneously and ‘Fuzzy, purple and full of thorns...’ is also set in an apartment building, but this building is entirely different from the previous one. Gully cricket would probably be frowned upon in these premises and heavily fined. Film production offices, creative agencies and studio floors feature prominently in the showbiz heavy episode of ‘What clown wrote this script!’ And bringing up the rear, ‘Why did she leave me there…?’ traverses multiple worlds, from opulent parts of the New City to the impoverished slums by Moosi. If one takes a macro view of the entire anthology as a whole, these settings come together as individual pieces of a colourful mosaic, that represents life in Hyderabad today.

Renuka (Renu), a 2D animator by profession and an aspiring comic book author, finds a pair of collection-item slippers that obviously belonged to some woman in her boyfriend’s closet. She’s been in a live-in relationship with him for a couple of years now and assumed that they know everything there’s to know about each other by now. But those damn skeletons still keep tumbling out. Okay that’s too dramatic but that’s Renu for you.She tries hard not to show how she’s actually feeling about this (raw and insecure) to her boyfriend and tries various ways to make him get rid of the slippers, that, as it turns out, belonged to an ex of his. A few missteps, some unwarranted fights and many sleepless nights later she finally manages to make him do the deed. Problem is there’s something else in the apartment that belonged to the same ex, the difference being, unlike the slippers, Renu really loves this other item, a coffee maker. Suddenly, she starts to question her previously firm views about the etiquette of holding on to one’s ex’s things.

‘Why did she leave me there…?’ is the story of a man’s journey of coming to terms with his carefully hidden past, and accept himself with a deeper understanding of his own place in the universe. Rohan Dhruvraj is the CEO of an extremely successful company called RD ventures. We meet him as he is giving an inaugural speech about a successful mindset and the kind of lifestyle that would guarantee success in this dog-eat-dog world. As he is contemplating something about the past in his office, he is asked to come to the parking lot by his friend Satish who has planned a surprise for him. Satish takes Rohan to an Orphanage, as he tells Rohan that the best birthday gift for him would be to feed these little angels and Rohan needs to help him in this endeavour. As they are doing this, a flood of memories starts to come in about his childhood. We learn that Rohan’s name was Ramulu and he used to live in a shack near an impoverished slum with his sister Kalavati and Grandma. His grandmother used to take care of them once they lost their parents. As they lived in abject poverty, their grandmother did chores and household maid work to feed them every day. One day they lose Kalavati to an accident. Over the coming days, it gets harder and harder to take care of Ramulu for his grandmother with her deteriorating health and financial circumstances. This made her choose to leave him at the very same orphanage that Rohan is at now. While the guilt eats her up, she knew that this would mean a better life for him. He was then adopted by Mr and Mrs. Dhruvraj, which leads us back to his life now.He later confesses about his past to Satish and his sister Jyothi who both explain to him that this is not something he should be feeling guilty about. While he tries to comes to terms with his past, it remains to be seen if he finds an answer to the most defining question of his; why did she leave me there?

Ashwin (33) is looking to create a new show for the production house he works for. He comes across a natural stand-up comic (Vinnie, 25) at an open mic event - someone who’d be a perfect fit for his show. He asks her to meet at an upmarket restaurant. They hit it off right away, falling for each other’s nervous traits, leading to an unusual romance between the two. They begin writing as a team, inspired by their own time together and end up shooting a pilot for the show. All the while, he’s worried that he’ll be perceived as a casting-couch sleazebag for being with her while she really finds herself awkward and unsure about most things in life. The romance ultimately spirals when the production decides to replace Vinnie with a known actor. Ashwin begins to despise the process. Soon enough, the show is put on hold. The show’s fate is intertwined with their romance, which ends abruptly. We wait to see if this relationship can ever be rekindled.

Sneha is looking for suitors. As she goes on one date, her father Sridhar follows her. Sridhar is a typical overprotective father, and an old-fashioned one at that. He spies on Sneha and her date through binoculars, jots down his notes in a pocket-sized journal, and enlists the help of taxi and rickshaw drivers while doing so. This becomes a sort of ritual for Sridhar every time Sneha goes on a date. He comes to enjoy the whole process even though he initially started doing it for the sake of his daughter. Sridhar meets a boy from their own community, who teaches him how to use the Internet to track Sneha's movements. While he is doing so, his daughter catches him, and the two get into a fight. Sneha becomes furious with him, and Sridhar promises her that he will stop his sleuthing. Sneha next goes on a date with a boy named Jai, whom she likes very much. Sneha amuses Jai with the story of her father’s activities, and the two really hit it off. By Sneha reaches home happily, her father gets admitted in the hospital with some breathing problems. Sneha is already married and gets separated from her husband in one day. On the day of marriage, Sneha finds out that her husband is a drug addict. Because of that experience Sridhar is very cautious and afraid of his daughter's future. To know what happens next, we have to watch it on the screen.

The film tells the story of a heart-broken young women’s quest to find love with the help of her trusted group of friends. Indu is a microbiology student who recently had a break up with the love of her life. One day she is talking about her love-life with her friends, Srilekha, a free-spirited extrovert, Ayesha, an optimistic and empathetic young woman and Subha who does not talk much but is a pillar of strength to the whole group. In the ensuing conversation, they conclude that she needs to move on and find the ‘right man’ for her. She comes to the conclusion that at a primal level all human emotions resemble the core traits of animals, and if she can equate those traits to the men she is dating, voila she finds her ‘right man’. As this hilarious odyssey is afoot, she meets multiple guys who resemble a myriad of animal traits like a flamboyant man who behaves like a peacock, an overly family-focussed man who mirrors a bower bird, etc. A series of dates play out, but she does not feel any true connection with any of them. This pushes her further into an existential crisis, and makes her even more adamant in this seemingly impossible quest. In this low moment, a souvenir reminds her of the love of her life, Vivek and she reaches out to him. Only to realise that he seems to be pretty happy and in a healthy relationship. This finally makes her realise that what she was trying to find externally was right in her reach this whole time. The answer to her quest is a lot simpler. This epiphany forms the narrative core of the quirky, coming of age tale called ‘Finding your penguin...’.
