Wanting to take care of an unresolved issue in his life before he can propose marriage to Nina, Dr. Brown takes a mysterious trip. Meanwhile, at Delia's Bat Mitzvah, Amy realizes she still has strong feelings for Ephram when she sees him with his new girlfriend, Stephanie--who competes with Amy for his affections. Also, after a patient leaves her baby on the Abbotts' doorstep, Dr. Abbott tries to figure out the best course of action, especially when Rose becomes attached to the little girl.

Nach dem Unfalltod seiner Frau beschließt der erfolgreiche New Yorker Neurochirurg Dr. Andrew Brown (Treat Williams), ein völlig neues Leben in der Provinz zu beginnen. Mit seinem 15 Jahre alten Sohn Ephram (Gregory Smith) und der neunjährigen Tochter Delia (Vivien Cardone) zieht er in die idyllische Kleinstadt Everwood in den Rocky Mountains. Vor allem das gestörte Verhältnis zu Ephram macht Andrew zu schaffen, der bisher zwar ein hervorragender Arzt, aber ein schlechter Vater war. Jetzt will er sich bessern. Auch anderen Menschen möchte er Gutes tun. Er eröffnet in Everwood eine kostenlose Klinik und macht sich damit den bisher einzigen ortsansässigen Arzt, Dr. Harold Abbott (Tom Amandes), zum Feind. Der verbietet seinen Teenager-Kindern Amy (Emily VanCamp) und Bright (Chris Pratt) jeglichen Umgang mit den Browns. Ausgerechnet Abbotts Mutter Edna (Debra Mooney) heuert in Andrews Klinik als Krankenschwester an. Die gute Seele des Ortes ist der Busfahrer Mr. Irv (John Beasley).
