The true story behind Ron Howard�۪s Rush. 1976 was a year like no other in the high-pressure world of Formula 1. Ferrari�۪s Niki Lauda was defending Champion and looked to be a strong favourite to retain his crown. Unfazed by the weight of expectation, Britain�۪s James Hunt started to collect valuable points in his debut year for McLaren. Elsewhere Emerson Fittipaldi made the patriotic switch to the Brazilian funded Copersucar team run by his brother Wilson and Tyrell unveiled the headline-grabbing P34 six-wheeler. At various stages in the year intrigue, officialdom and pure luck played their parts in keeping the drama of the title chase alive. As the battle between Lauda and Hunt intensified it seemed it might have come to a premature conclusion when the Ferrari driver suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation in a crash at Nurburgring. Fighting for his life, Lauda didn�۪t give up hope of once more claiming the driver�۪s championship. In less than six weeks he was back on track and the scene was set for the most enthralling end to a season ever. All this took place in the era before global F1 television coverage. Luckily the Brunswick Film archives have extensive footage of the racing and these have been skillfully combined with an informed narrative to create a superb review of a classic year of F1 racing.
